It use to be that the most important thing for a blog was to capture a lot of RSS readers. But today that is no longer the case. RSS readers have proven very hard to monetize (make money from), don´t participate in the comments, and even the introduction of Google Adsense for RSS feeds hasn´t changed things.
Newsletters on blogs
Today most of the popular blog, the so called A-list bloggers, offer an email newsletter.
Blog designs have also changed in order to capture more email newsletter subscribers. Most blogs now have a newsletter opt-in form in a very prominent position, usually on the header.
It is also becoming increasingly common to see blogs that have pop-up forms to capture email newsletter subscribers. They are a little annoying, but the fact of the matter is they work.
Blog newsletters become popular
Blog newsletters became increasingly popular in late 2008, when a-list blogger Darren Rowse, revealed how he increased the number of daily newsletter subscribers on his digital photography blog after installing the Aweber pop-up.
After this other bloggers followed suit, and today, most major blogs offer email newsletters.
Reasons why you should have a blog newsletter
If you are still looking for a few reasons to install a newsletter on your blog, take a look at these great reasons:
When a new visitor finds your blog and subscribes to your RSS feed, he will receive any future posts you publish. He will not however have access to any of the great content you already published on your blog. Nor will he sign-up to the all those affiliate programs you promoted in the past. Contrast this to what would happen if this same visitor subscribed to your newsletter. In this case, not only would he receive any future posts you publish, he will also be able to receive all the great content you published in the past. You do this by setting up an auto responder that will deliver some of your best content. You can also deliver posts (emails) where you promoted affiliate programs and thus keep getting sign-ups for these programs, earning you more money. And the good news is you can do all this with very little additional work. The other great reason to have a blog newsletter is in the event that you suddenly decide to stop blogging. If that happened all those regular RSS readers you had so much trouble signing up will never here from you again. Any new visitor that finds your blog through the search engines and subscribes to your RSS feed will also never hear from you. Your newsletter subscribes however will continue to receive all the emails you have in your auto responder. They will even keep signing up to all those affiliate programs, and this will in turn keep making you money. What will also happen is that any new subscriber you get will receive the emails set-up in your auto responder, even though you are not even posting any more!
As you can see, with an email newsletter your blog will keep making more money for you even if you decide to stop blogging!
