Layers are a powerful feature of Photoshop that allow you to work on one part of an image without disturbing the rest of it. While the concept of layers may seem intimidating at first, once you get the hang of using layers you’ll wonder how you ever survived without them!

The transparent parts of any layer, shown by the checkered grid, allow the layers beneath that layer to show through. You can show and hide each layer in an image by clicking on its corresponding eye icon in the Layers palette.

To organize your layers, you can arrange them into layer groups by going to Layer > New > Group…. Each layer group displays in the same way as any ungrouped layers on the Layers palette. A layer group is signified by a folder icon. You can collapse or expand layer groups by clicking on the triangle to the left of the folder icon, and nest layer groups within each other by dragging one folder icon into another.

Here are 10 quick Layer Shortcuts.

1 – Rename layers by double-clicking on the layer name.

2 – Select a layer by using the keyboard shortcuts Alt-[ and Alt-] (Option-[ and Option-] on a Mac).

3 – Merge a layer into the one beneath it by pressing Ctrl- E (Command-E). If you have selected layers, this shortcut
will merge those selected layers together.

4 – Change the transparency of a layer by changing its opacity with the Opacity slider, or typing a value into the
Opacity box (which is visible when you have the Selection, Move, or Crop tools selected).

5 – Duplicate a selected layer by pressing Ctrl-J (Command-J on a Mac). You can also duplicate a layer by dragging it
while pressing the Alt (Option) key.

6 – Select multiple layers by holding down Ctrl (Command on a Mac) and clicking the layer names. This forms a temporary link between the selected layers that allows you to move them as one unit, delete them all, and so on.

7 – You can also link layers together. Select layers by clicking on them while holding down Shift or Ctrl (Command
on a Mac).

8 – To unlink all the layers, select one of the linked layers and go to Layer > Unlink Layers.

9 – To temporarily unlink a layer, hold down Shift and click on its link icon (a red “X” will appear over the link icon).

10 – Reactivate the link by holding down Shift and clicking the link icon again.

Anyone who plans on spending any length of time wandering the halls of Photoshop should consider learning how Photoshop layer sets work.

Layers are crucial to the entire mechanism of Photoshop design and enhancement.

The Photoshop “Layers” palette maintains a precise history of all your keystrokes… so you don’t have to remember anything.

Layers can be likened to your command post, so it behooves you to spend some time in there. Let’s take a brief look around right now.

Hmm, looks complicated, doesn’t it? Well, unlike a lot of other functions inside Photoshop, Layers really is pretty simple.

Basically, it isolates different sections or transformations so you can work on them without affecting the rest of the image.

Which really comes in handy when you find yourself up against the wall and need to start that particular enhancement over: just throw that layer away.

Your Photoshop Layers box will automatically create a new layer for you for some changes, but you can also create a new yourself.

On your top menu bar, click “Layer,” then “New.” You’ll see a brand new, empty layer appear inside your Layers box. Notice that it has been highlited and the “background,” or original, layer is not.

The highlighted layer is the active layer, meaning that’s the one you’re presently working on. To activate a different layer, simply click on it, and Photoshop highlights (activates) it for you.

Becoming aware of this one function is essential for successfully working in layers.

(Note: Photoshop CS2 lets you activate multiple layers.)

Once you have a few layers inside your Layers dialog box, try clicking the eyeballs next to each one.

You’ll see that in this way you can visually isolate layers so you can tell exactly what it is you’re working on.

At times, you will find yourself creating many, many layers for a single image. When that happens, it gets difficult to find the layer you want to affect.

The solution to this problem lies in creating groups, or “layer sets.” Grouping layers allows you to place them into a folder. (In Photoshop CS, first link the layers, then choose “New Set from Linked” on the side menu of the Layers box.)

In Photoshop 7, you create a group by choosing each one, then clicking “Group with Previous” inside your Layer option in the top menu. Or you can click the tiny folder icon at the bottom of the

Layers palette and drag the layers into that layer when it appears, then click the collapse arrow to the left of the set folder to hide the layers inside the folder.

If you want to get rid of the set folder later, highlight it, then click Layer, Delete, Set, then choose either “Set and Contents” or “Set Only.”

Some versions of Photoshop require you to choose your layers and then “Shift-Click” on the bottom folder icon to create a set folder. In Photoshop CS2, you can align layers by choosing View > Show > Smart Guides.

Like all the other fabulous Photoshop functions, Layers offers almost limitless ways to affect your photos and the way you maneuver around inside Photoshop itself.

You’ve probably been hanging out to get stuck into the very nifty Photoshop toolbox. In this article I’ll introduce some of the most frequently used tools found in the toolbox.

You’ll notice that some of the tool icons have small black triangles in their bottom right-hand corners. These icons contain hidden treasures! The triangle indicates that there are more related tools available; if you click on the tool icon and hold it down, a “flyout” menu will appear, displaying the additional tools.

Selection Tools:
You can use the selection tools to select certain areas of your document for editing. If you use a selection tool, only the area that’s selected will be affected by any changes you make. You can “feather” selections (specify a fuzzy radius for them) using the Feather field in the options bar.

Marquee tools (M) are used to create rectangular or elliptical selections, including selections that are “single row” (one pixel tall, stretching across the entire width of the document) and “single column” (one pixel wide, tretching through the entire height of the document).

To make single-row or single-column selections, click with the appropriate tool on the image area where you want to select a row or column. You can use the Lasso tools (L) to create freeform selections.

The Lasso Tool comes in three different forms:

Lasso Tool (L) Click and drag the Lasso Tool to draw a selection area. Releasing the mouse button will close the selection by joining the start and end points with a straight line.

Polygonal Lasso Tool (L) Click at different points to create vertices of a polygonal shape. Close the selection by moving your cursor to the beginning and clicking once, or pressing the Enter key.

Magnetic Lasso Tool (L) If you think you need help with making your selection, try the Magnetic Lasso Tool. Photoshop will attempt to make a “smart” selection by following the edges of contrast and color difference. Click once near the “edge” of an object and follow around it-Photoshop will automatically lay down a path.

You can also click as you follow the line to force points to be created on the path. Close the selection by pressing the Enter key or clicking at a point near the beginning of the selection. The Magnetic Lasso Tool is not available in ImageRead

Learning how Photoshop 7.0 works is relatively easy…just as long as you know and understand how each category of tools work. But because there are a variety of tools provided in Photoshop 7.0, it’s certainly understandable if you’re feeling a little intimidated.

Most Important Tools to Know in Photoshop 7.0

Cropping Tools – Crop is simply a fancier term for cut, and if you know how the cut function works with text, then that’s basically how the crop function works with images as well.

Image Viewing Tools – There are only two tools under this category – hand and zoom – but you’ll be using both frequently. The zoom option is easy to understand because it simply magnifies or shrinks the image, so you should just concentrate more on learning about the hand tool.

Moving Tools – This is what you use to move a cropped or selected area from one image to another and for adding layers.

Painting Tools – In this category, you’ll be able to edit or add color to your images. The most basic tools are the brush and paint bucket – they work just the way their name implies. The airbrush can be used for a softened look. Other tools in this category are history brushes, the pencil tool, and gradients.

When using the painting tools, you’ll have the option of using pre-selected colors or creating your own palette. Make sure that you memorize the code for each color you create so as not to redo the whole process afterwards.

Retouching Tools – This category of Photoshop 7.0 tools is better suited for intermediate users. As its name also implies, retouching tools are used to further enhance the quality or overall appearance of your images. The eraser can be used to delete any part of the image. The patch tool and healing brush are both used to rectify errors in the image. Blur or sharp can be used to make the image fade or sharpen in appearance respectively.

Other tools in this category are smudge, sponge, burn, and dodge. You’ll find it easier to understand how each tool works by comparing before and after effects.

Selection Tools – There are two basic tools in this category: the select and deselect tool. Use the select tool to determine which area or part of the image you wish to focus on. Once the area has been selected, any subsequent action made will be applied to the selected area only. The deselect tool is used to undo the selection. Other tools under this category are the lassos – selecting irregularly shaped areas, quick mask, magic wand (a wonderful and easy to explore tool), and other marquee tools.

Vector Tools – If retouching tools are suited for intermediate users, vector tools are more suited for advanced Photoshop 7.0 users. Although very much in use in a professional capacity, they’re not something you’re likely to utilize frequently if all you’re interested in is making personal photos prettier for your online scrapbook.

Vector tools include pen, line, shape, and path select, and are used to create and edit vectors. If you’re interested in learning and understanding how vector tools work, be prepared to expend more time and effort than usual.

There are other tools offered by Photoshop 7.0 of course, but it’s best that you concentrate first on the tools listed above. If you still feel unsatisfied with what you can do with the tools described here then by all means increase your knowledge!

Adobe Photoshop is the modern standard in digital photography. Now, even amateur photographers can very well produce outputs that can be appropriately compared to those taken by professionals. The Adobe Photoshop is a post-production imaging tool that would surely help do the trick.

In 1987, brothers John and Thomas Knoll developed a special software for post-processing of pictures. After that, the inventors realized that there is a striking potential of their developed computer program. To underpin the opportunity the Knoll brothers established a company known as Adobe Systems, which launched the initial version of Adobe Photoshop in 1990.

After that, as you know, what transpired next was history. At least every other year since its launch, Adobe Systems is continuously modifying its own popular product. Thus, there are now several versions of the Adobe Photoshop, each version trying to outpace the preceding version. Consumers and users are benefiting because their choices of the software is ever expanding.

Initially, the Adobe Photoshop was meant to help image editing for the purpose of paper-based printing. In the past, you have seen how printing of pictures can be altered and enhanced using the software. But through the years, that main function has also been modified. With the increasing demand for image editing for Web sites, Adobe Photoshop has expanded into digital imaging for Web posting.

Online uses

Now you can see that almost all popular and widely visited online sites are using pictures that are perfectly enhanced by Adobe Photoshop. Online users are very appreciative about edited images, and are highly critical of pictures that did not pass the software. Currently, images that never run through the Adobe Photoshop are considered ineffective.

Of course, in almost every picture, digital enhancements must be done. A simple portrait of a woman, for example, needs to be processed using Adobe Photoshop to crop and edit out several imperfections like unlikely hair strands, noticeable facial flaws and non-attractive hues.

In some photographs, even the presence of excess fats captured in the picture should be cropped out. The Adobe Photoshop runs specific features to make that possible. Thus, images are truly made picture-perfect.

Versions

Manipulation of digital images is truly made effective, convenient and possible by the use of the software. Now, Adobe Photoshop, whatever version, is considered a must in every personal computer. Even if you are not a photographer or a publisher, you may occasionally or regularly need using the software for whatever image processing you may need.

Adobe Systems have also made sure every user will be covered. You may be surprised that latest Adobe Photoshop versions are compatible with almost every computer program and applications used. Thus, you would always get access to the software.

Purchasing Adobe Photoshop versions would also not be a hassle. You could easily buy a copy of the software online. It would only take a few seconds or minutes before you could install your own copy of the program.

There are also several free versions of Adobe Photoshop. Though, you practically should expect minor flaws or limited features. If you aim to get a copy that has all the complicated and highly technical features, you should download premium versions of the software. That would be a good investment because you surely would not run out of uses for the Adobe Photoshop.

In 1987, brothers John and Thomas Knoll started developing a computer program that would focus mainly on imaging and photography using the computer. Little did the brothers knew by that time that they would come to develop one of the computer world’s most sought after software—the Adobe Photoshop.

When the program was initially developed, the Knolls established a firm called the Adobe Systems. The history of the company is equally interesting as the Photoshop itself. You might be wondering where the name Adobe was derived.

The word is obviously not a family name of the company’s founders, but is a name of a creek located at the back of the house of the Knolls. There must be something special about that creek, perhaps good photographic scenery that helped the brothers take inspiration in developing the Photoshop.

The first version of the Adobe Photoshop was released in 1990. Since then, many modifications have been made. Now, Adobe Photoshop is the market pioneer and leader in image manipulation using the computer. The software is very great help to newspaper layout people and photographers, who strive to create good packaging of content products.

The Adobe Photoshop has become an industry standard when it comes to tasks involving visual elements. The program combines the genuine beauty of real pictures with the original and awesome creative features modern computer technology has to offer.

Photoshop’s impact to the industry

Because everything is turning digital in the computer age, Photoshop is considered one of the most basic software any corporate firm must invest in. Digital image manipulation is the thing of the modern times. That is why the popularity of Photoshop is truly rapidly rising.

Now, photographers and even aspiring photographers are in equal footing when it comes to image manipulation. Imaging tasks that used to be done by professionals over about two to three days, would certainly be accomplished using the Photoshop for just a couple of hours, if not minutes.

Now, no photographic image would be good without passing the digital process manipulation under Photoshop. In every photograph, there is always a bit of flaw, and it is the job of Adobe Photoshop to help photography editors to modify and conceal those irritating little flows.

The Creative Suite

The most commonly used versions of the Adobe Photoshop are the Adobe versions 3 to 7. But if you encounter Adobe Photoshop CS versions, do not fret. These software are actually the more modern versions, or modifications, of the same old reliable Photoshop.

Of course, as time went on, many features of the Photoshop had to be adjusted and made better to cope up with users’ ever expanding and demanding requirements. The Adobe Photoshop CS is the customized software for those demands.

Adobe has rebranded its modern Photoshop products with the CS brand so that users and software buyers would easily identify which products carry Adobe’s most excellent and latest features. There is not much difference though.

However, it is an accepted fact that like the advanced Photoshop versions in the past, Adobe Photoshop CS products are expensively priced. But the company is now coming up with sub-versions that do not completely offer all the usual features of the Adobe CS Photoshop. These sub-versions are usually less priced.

If you are into photography or computer layouting, be sure to get your own copy of the Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Photoshop CS software.

One way to avert yourself from making an expensive blunder is to hire an affordable web design company.

‘Affordable’ word may show you ray of hope in the midst of expensive website designing services charging outrageous costs for their services labelled as either as ‘exclusive’ or ‘premium’ services – however, are they really worth or assure you higher returns on your investment in web designing? Though we are quite tend to assume that just because we are prioritising on our budget we certainly need to compromise on quality – this can be true in some cases, but also a cliché which is limiting your choices or inhibiting you from seeking quality services within your budget.

Experience and expertise – the proficiency of a web designing depends a great deal on the industry exposure it has generated throughout its total years of services. An affordable web designing company might have catered to the industry or types of websites akin to yours – all you need to do is scrutinise its clients’ testimonials. If the technical skill set, information on their services, seek reviews on their promotional solutions and materials. At the same time consider having an in person confrontation or conversation with the company to probe about their knowledge.

Company’s case studies and portfolio – another way to know whether you are sacrificing on the quality through taking a analysis of the portfolio which showcases their previous works and designing samples. Another area to give you better insight on how the company handles its web designing is through case studies that reveal how capable they are in understanding web designing projects similar to yours. Thus, you can take a prudent decision which will be based on real facts and observation, not to be misguided by assumption or hypes.

These above mentioned factors should be taken under consideration to take a good affordable web design company from a hyped expensive website designing company.

Cutting and painting can only go so far. If that’s all you wanted to do with your photos, you shouldn’t have bothered purchasing Adobe Photoshop 7.0. This software is very powerful, and it would be such a waste if you don’t allow your knowledge and skills to grow with it.

If it’s your first time to use any Photoshop software, you might as well start with the best.

The Pixelate Function
Look for the Filter section in the tool menu situated on top of your screen. There are various options under the Filter category, and you can start playing with images with the pixelate function. The pixelate function allows you to modify images and turn them into different artistic styles. Remember when your art appreciation class required you to do a mosaic all by yourself and with your own two hands? It was hard work, wasn’t it? Now imagine being able to do that with any photo or image saved in your computer with just one click! And yes, you can do that just by clicking on pixelate and mosaic next.

Other artistic styles included under pixelate are crystallize, fragment, facet, color halftone, pointillize, and mezzotint.

How to Get Rid of Blemishes
Are you afraid of having your photos taken in close range because you don’t want to make your blemishes – acne, scars, and so forth – too visible? If that’s your only problem, Photoshop 7.0 can certainly eliminate such worries. There are various ways to accomplish that, but the easiest and basic strategy – which is where you should start as well – you could use is the blur function.

The blur function is still under the Filter category. Select the area that you wish to fade away into oblivion and then start clicking the blur function. Keep clicking blur or pressing Ctrl F until the area’s properly invisible. If the area’s too big, blurring the area would be definitely noticeable. But if they’re as small as dots on your face, rest assured that you could later on enjoy a blemish-free face from hereon forward in all your images.

The Importance of Layers
You hear about how important layering is in various aspects. Layering is important when applying fragrance to your skin or when you’re wearing clothes for fashion, winter, and sports. But layering is important in enhancing images as well, and you could learn how and why through Photoshop 7.0.

Now, in the previous version of Photoshop, using the Layer opacity affects all the layers you have in your image. Changing or modifying the effects of Layer opacity is slightly complicated however…until the arrival of the Fill opacity of Photoshop 7.0, that is. With the Fill opacity, only the layer you specified will be affected when you make certain changes.

Why the Magic Wand is Magical Indeed
Let’s say that you have a photo of — Barney the purple dinosaur in a garden background. Now, you want to get only the outline of Barney and nothing else. In the old days, you’d have to painstakingly cut it part by part. But in Photoshop 7.0, all you have to do is click the outline of Barney with the magic wand and voila! Mission accomplished. If it can’t be done in one click, you could just add everything to a selection until you complete Barney’s image.

Practice, practice, practice is all you need to do to master Photoshop 7.0. Good luck!

Felties is a sewing book that shows you how to make cute little stuffed friends. I made sure I used the word “friends” here, because the illustrations in this book give each one so much life and character that I feel they deserve to be called friends, not toys. Nelly Pailloux is a crafter and writer, and is popular in the blogosphere mostly for her amigurumi creations. Her blog, La Fee Crochette, has some free tutorials and lots of photos of her creations. Suitable for the absolute beginner, this book is a wonderful introduction to sewing. Even for the experienced crafter, Felties is a great source of inspiration and I challenge anyone to be able to resist such cute little felt friends.

There are step by step instructions for each character, which are very easy to follow. There is also a pattern included in actual size, so all you have to do is trace and cut. This makes you realise how small each one really is; nimble fingers are essential. I also recommend using tweezers when gluing bits and pieces together to avoid grubby finger marks on the felt. I liked the author’s method of inserting arms and legs inside the body with glue before stitching over them. I guess you need to try it yourself to see what I mean, but basically, the method makes sense and even with the most basic sewing skills, each project would take you less than an hour to make. It gives you a great sense of achievement to finish a project so quickly.

What really won me over in Felties is the illustration and photo included for each character. Each one comes to life on the page with its own unique backdrop. Full of personality, the illustrations remind me of a manga comic. All 18 Felties are adorable, but my favourites are the Sailor Puppy and the Polaro-roo (featured on the front cover). It’s a lot of fun just flipping through the book to look at the pictures!

I guess the question on many people’s minds would be, “What do I do with these toys once I have made them?”. Perhaps a page or two on ideas to answer this question would have been useful in this book. Every character in Felties is really cute, so other than displaying them, I have these suggestions:

* Stick a magnet on it and use it as a fridge magnet.

* Sew on a safety pin to make a brooch.

* Sew a few of them on a length of ribbon and tie up for decoration.

The ease and quickness of each project in Felties is extremely satisfying, especially to people like me who are always trying to complete multiple craft projects. I enjoyed making my Felties so much that I was inspired to make my own felt possum friend. This book will also make an ideal gift for someone just starting out in sewing. All in all, I think Felties is an inspiring and fun book that injects a healthy dose of cuteness into your sewing repertoire.

Felties by Nelly Pailloux is published by Penguin Books (ISBN: 978 0 14 3203391)

A website is a corporate identity on the internet. An online website of a business or company helps you with consistent branding of your identity across all global market; strategically helps your business to grow. A well designed online presence can effectively promote your brand message and deliver a pleasant user experience. Websites are not only to be visually pleasing but must also be user friendly so that user can understand what you are offering. There are many things to consider when you want to put up a website online. However, first, you must decide on the topic of your website.

An important thing to remember when you are designing your website is that you want a clean professional look. It might look pretty if your construction business site looks like a nightclub type, but your visitors will only get confused and lost in the gleam and will leave your site, go onto another site. A failed design does not necessarily mean poor design or an ugly Website. Rather, a failing design is one that fails to function properly for the site where it’s used. A design can be very nice, but be terrible for its purpose. You want a clean, uniform design on all pages which should also be easy to navigate. If your Website target is to sell something or generate excitement over a specific idea, you’ll want to design accordingly. For a site promoting surveillance cameras, you wouldn’t want to use a calm ocean picture as your header with deep ocean blues and blacks in your design, you will want some surveillance camera video or picture in your. Sure, you may be able to make a very pretty design many other ways, but it would be a failed design because it would not supplement the site’s goal or message. Visit a few popular sites and see how they are set up and take notice of which ones you can easily find your way in and which ones you easily get lost in and the kind of feeling the design of the sites give to you and you will understand what I mean.

The easy to use well designed sites help businesses to flourish. If your business website is not delivering the results that you had hoped for, take some time to seriously evaluate your site and make some changes before spending your time and money on advertising and marketing. You may be pleasantly surprised after you get search engine optimization services and your well design website will bring you good rate of conversion.

While creating a website for your business, you must consider what color combinations you are using. Colors speak their own language and convey about emotions instantly. Use colors sparingly and intelligently, in the creation of your website. Once you understand how to use colors into your site, your website performance will get better. Your site should cover all features from excellent homepage to easy navigation to a discussion board or online forum etc.. We know building and maintaining a website takes time and work, but once you get things done, it will be beneficial for you in the future.

Many amateur designers mix up the process of design. What is worse is that this is a direct path to failure and they do not even realize it. This, at its most basic, is the process of web design:

Planning: Before you even get any idea in your head about what your latest Web design is going to look like, you need to do all the appropriate planning. Mostly, this includes knowing the answers to important questions related to the business you are into. And how you will lay out all these information in your website.

Content Building: You need to build all of the texts, literatures, photos and other content of your site after you have a clear plan. This doesn’t necessarily mean getting every detail down, but you need to know what your text length will be, where it will go and what grphics or photos to put along with your texts that will match what your descriptions etc.

Designing: Starting a website designing is a crucial step, of course, but if you have already done the planning and content building first, this part will be the most fun, and most likely the most result-driven.

Development: Once you have finalized your design, you’ll turn it into XHTML/CSS/PHP/MySQL and whatever else your site needs. Development typically refers to the technical side of Website design ie. the coding and and other backend work.

As you can see, when you are a professional designer, designing the site comes late in the game. Many amateur designers make mistake of wanting to jump right into the design step, because that is after all where a designer’s talents are. But if you avoid the planning and content building steps, you will end up with a design that fails in helping the site achieve its targets.
